Oliver Sanford, Jr. (6-1018) was an early and prominent member of the Baptist Church, and for many years a deacon. He was a farmer in Poultney, Vermont where all his life was spent. On 25 May 1795, Oliver and Catherine Green Sanford signed a quit claim of all rights in the Susquehanna Purchase which had been willed by their father, Robert Green, to his children. The estate was distributed 29 Aug 1846. (Historical Society, Hartford, Ct., Book C, p. 562).

Thomas Sanford Genealogy c., 1911, p. 275

Oliver Sanford, Jr., whose homestead was in the north part of Poultney, Vermont, was appointed deacon of the Baptist Church on 18 Dec 1804 and remained so until 1835. He died at age 70 in Poultney and is buried near his parents at the Hosford's Crossing Cemetery in Poultney. A headstone near Oliver could belong to Catherine.

By about 1819, some of their sons, certainly including William and Sheldon, had removed to Ohio.

He helped on the farm until about 1933, when he was employed by the National Machinery Company at Tiffin, Ohio, makers of heavy production machinery. A self-taught mechanical and electrical expert in his field. They owned and lived on a farm near Tiffin, where all five of their children were born. They moved to Chicago, while working for a machinery firm for several years, and then moved to Erie, PA. They lived, worked, and then retired there, after years of the same type of engineering work. Sheldon Sanford (7-2446) moved to Ohio about 1818. He was a farmer and also ran a saw mill. In the days of training he was Captain of a company of Militia for many years. He removed to Oakville, Michigan about 1858. (Thomas Sanford Genealogy, c., 1911, p. 514).

He was living in Knox County on 2 Nov 1821, when he purchased three acres from Seth and Rachel Nash. Sheldon paid $40 for this land in the northeast corner of the SW 1/4 of Bloomfield Township, Section 14, about two miles southwest of Sparta, Ohio along the old state road that ran from Mansfield to Columbus, Ohio. Seth Nash had built the first blacksmith shop in the area just four years earlier in 1817. (Source: O.L. Baskin + Co., "History of Morrow County, Ohio 1880", Chicago, 1880, p. 456).

Bloomfield Township, Ohio was part of Knox County until 1848. It was first settled in 1813 when three men from Mr. Vernon, Knox County, pushed west into an unbroken forest with deer, large turkeys and wolves were an everyday sight. Sheldon and his brothers probably were not far behind. (Source: O.L. Baskin + Co., "History of Morrow County, Ohio 1880", Chicago, 1880, p. 456).

Through the years Sheldon continued to acquire land. On 17 Jun 1852 began selling off his land holdings and in about 1854 or 1855 he moved his family, including Reuben, from Ohio to Michigan. Thus, the Sanford move was probably made at or near the time that John and Fannie Hooker made the same relocation. In 1860, Sheldon and Phoebe were living in London Township, Monroe Co., Michigan, just a few miles from John and Fannie Hooker.

According to his grave marker, Sheldon Sanford died in 1871, although the LDS Ancestral File, Version 4.17, cites a death date of January 1870. His wife died seven years after him of dropsy, and both are buried at Raleighville Cemetery southeast of Milan, Michigan on Townsend Road.

Sheldon could also be related to Samuel Harrison Sanford (b. 7 Jun 1818, d. 6 Oct 1875) and Elizabeth (b. 13 Feb 1824, d. 5 Mar1901) of Wyandot County. These possible relatives of Sheldon are buried at the Tymochtee Cemetery in Wyandot County.

Stephen Sanford (4-139) and his wife Esther had no children. He was a man of considerable wealth and resided in New Haven. He bequeathed one dozen large bibles to different relatives. He was one of the original members of the Woodbridge Congregational Church, and was honored by his fellow townsmen and took a deep interest in the church. He made the church a present of a Baptismal Bowl and Communion Service which, it was said, was still in use in 1910. At his death he left a large landed estate, which was afterwards sold, and from which, with other funds which he also gave the parish, was derived a large part of the society's present fund for the support of the gospel.

As an appreciation of his services the following inscription was placed upon the monument erected to his memory:

"Captain Stephen Sanford of Woodbridge departed this life on the sixth day of January, 1779, in the 72nd year of his age. His character was reputable as a man and a Christian. He had the advancement of Christ's kingdom in this place so much the largest part of his estate, amounting to £930 L. M. and appropriated the same to the support of the ministry in this society. This society, therefore, as an acknowledgment and lasting memory of their gratitude for so liberal and distinguished a benefaction, at their own expense have erected this monument."

Additional information on her ancestors are researched via Thomas Andrew Sanford, her sixth great grandfather, and is located on Brøderbund World Family Tree, Volume 8, Pedigree #3331. This provides a vital link to Nicholas deSandford and his spouse, Alice Botilier. Alice is a descendant of Henry II, King of England, and links the Sanford family with the royal families of the United Kingdom and other royal families on the continent, and therefore the Bement line links with Sanford, and royal line, at this branch of the Bement tree. Obituary of Susan "Susie" Belle (Sanford) Bement:

Big Rapids (Michigan) Pioneer, Wednesday Evening, March 15, 1899

Mrs. Will Bement of Grand Rapids, better know here as Susie Sanford, died last night of consumption (tuberculosis) at her home on North Front Street, and the remains will be brought here Friday morning for burial, going directly to the cemetery. Mrs. Bement, who was a daughter of D(avid) H(enry) Sanford, of this city, was born in Cedar Springs 27 years ago, and spent her childhood in Big Rapids. She was possessed of a sunny disposition, and her quiet, lady-like ways won her many friends. She was a member of the Baptist church in this city a number of years, and a faithful worker in the young people's society of that denomination up to the time of her removal to Grand Rapids a few years ago, when she became Mrs. Bement. Two or three years prior to her marriage she was a compositor in this office. She leaves a husband and a little son about three years of age.

The "Susie" Story, as told by Marie Humphrey-Flintoff to her neice, Diane Decker-Warneke, 1998:

It seems that for generations, that when anyone would get up from a dinner table, before it's cleared, indicating they were going to "the bathroom", some body would say: "Where you going Susie?" The story is that Susie was known for excusing herself from the table to go to the outhouse, thus avoiding helping with cleanup.

Aside...my aunt says that she grew up with the story, and her kids, and I recall my mom saying the same thing...I was great at it..."Hey Susie, where ya going." (Note: Marie is the great niece of Susie Sanford)

Thomas Sanford was not only a successful man, but a thoughtful, sagacious man, deeply interested in his family's welfare. He wisely educated his children, well knowing they would do the same with their children. His will indicated him to be an active, enterprising citizen, and bore his part in public matters, though he did not achieve distinction in a political way.
